Getting Around Nanjing

There are plenty of flight options from Japan to Nanjing, and upon arrival,
travelers can easily reach the city center by train or bus from the airport.

Located in Jiangning District, Nanjing Lukou International Airport serves as the main gateway to both Jiangsu Province and Nanjing City. The airport features a state-of-the-art 4F-class flight zone, two parallel runways, two terminals, and an integrated transportation center, capable of handling up to 36 million passengers annually.
The airport is approximately 36 kilometers from downtown Nanjing and is conveniently connected to the city by an airport shuttle bus. It currently operates 40 international routes, including five intercontinental flights to destinations like Paris, Milan, and Melbourne, as well as 22 routes across Southeast Asia to countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Thailand.

Rail Travel in Nanjing

Nanjing’s railway network currently spans 510 kilometers, including 268 kilometers of high-speed rail. The high-speed trains connect Nanjing directly to 30 major cities across China, while the surrounding three-hour travel zone covers more than 50 cities.

Nanjing has two main railway stations in operation: Nanjing Railway Station and Nanjing South Railway Station, with Nanjing North Railway Station currently under construction.

Travelers arriving from cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou should bring their original passports when boarding high-speed trains to any Nanjing station.

Types of Trains in China

China’s trains are categorized based on speed and onboard services, indicated by their train numbers. Train numbers consist of a letter (such as G, D, C, Z, T, K) followed by digits, with the letter representing the train type and service level.

G-Trains: High-speed bullet trains running at speeds between 250 and 400 km/h. These are the fastest trains, offering quick and comfortable travel.
D-Trains: Regular high-speed trains with speeds ranging from 160 to 250 km/h, connecting major cities efficiently.
C-Trains: Intercity high-speed trains operating at speeds between 160 and 300 km/h, ideal for short-distance travel within metropolitan areas.
Z-Trains: Non-stop express trains running at speeds of 140 to 160 km/h, providing direct routes with fewer stops.
T-Trains: Special fast trains traveling at 120 to 140 km/h, offering a balance between speed and accessibility.
K-Trains: Regular fast trains with speeds from 110 to 120 km/h, serving many routes across China.

 

Nanjing Metro

Lines:Nanjing’s metro system is extensive and traveler-friendly, with 13 lines currently in operation: Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, and suburban lines S1, S3, S6, S7, S8, and S9. These lines cover most major tourist attractions, making it easy and convenient to explore the city.

Fares:Metro fares are calculated based on distance traveled, ranging from 2 to 15 RMB per trip. Each station is equipped with automatic ticket machines where you can check routes and prices and buy single-ride tickets by simply selecting your destination station.

Payment Methods:The metro accepts cash, unregistered public transport cards, and mobile NFC payments. You can purchase and recharge unregistered transport cards at the ticket machines for added convenience.
Tickets:

There are two types of metro tickets: token tickets and IC cards.
●Token tickets are plastic tokens used for single trips on the day of purchase, available from ticket machines.
For frequent travelers, the rechargeable IC card is a great option, offering a 5% discount on fares and can also be used on buses. IC cards start at a 50 RMB deposit and come in fun designs like Doraemon and Hello Kitty, in addition to the standard style.

Taxis in Nanjing

Nanjing offers three types of taxis to suit different needs:
●Standard Taxi:
Starting fare of 11 RMB for the first 3 kilometers, then 2.4 RMB per kilometer thereafter.
●Mid-range Taxi / Pure Electric Taxi:
Starting fare of 11 RMB for the first 2.5 kilometers, then 2.9 RMB per kilometer thereafter.
●Premium Taxi:
Starting fare of 11 RMB for the first 2 kilometers, then 2.9 RMB per kilometer thereafter.

Note:

Nanjing taxis charge a two-way fare all day. During peak hours (7:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–7:00 PM) and heavy traffic, fares may vary slightly due to congestion.
